Preparing for Your Tax Return

When is the tax filing deadline?

For most individuals, the deadline is April 30th. To avoid CRA fines please drop off your information as early as possible.

Do I need to make an appointment to drop off my tax information package?

No. You can drop off your information anytime during our business hours.

Are there any slips people often forget that I should bring with me?

Some items are easy to forget—like RRSP contribution receipts from the first 60 days of the year, records of investment activity (such as T5008 slips or realized gains/losses reports), property tax or rent details, tips you’ve received, prescription summaries, and a few other documents. Should I make copies of the information I bring, or is that not necessary?

You don't need to make copies.  We will return all of your original paperwork when you come in to review your tax return.  If we need to retain any information, we will keep a photocopy.

What's an online Canada Revenue account & how do I register for one?

An online CRA account is like online banking for your taxes, letting you view and manage all your tax and benefit information in one place. If you filed a return in the last two years, you can register by having a copy of your tax return ready and visiting the CRA website.  Registration requires that you enroll in multi-factor authentication and provide an email address. Full access to your CRA account will be granted after entering a CRA security code sent to you.

Business owners can register for a CRA My Business Account.

What if I am missing documents and receipts?

You should receive your documents and receipts by the end of February. Some documents — T3 or T5013 — arrive in March. If you have not received your T4, ask your employer for another one.  You must keep receipts to claim expenses such as disability credits, childcare, and rent receipts.

Please bring any additional 2025 tax information or slips into the office as soon as you can.

Please bring any additional 2025 tax information or slips into the office as soon as you can.  Once your return has been filed, it is important to deal with new information quickly to avoid or reduce potential interest and penalties.   

General Information

What is the new grocery rebate that has been proposed?

The Government of Canada has proposed to increase the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (formerly the GST Credit) by 25% for five years starting in July 2026. In addition, a one-time top-up payment equal to 50% of the 2025-26 value has also been proposed.

What do I need to know about claiming investment management fees?

Fees can only be claimed for non-registered money.  If this applies to you, please provide the full tax package sent to you from your bank, financial advisor, mutual fund provider, etc.

How long will it take to complete my tax return?

How long it takes can vary depending on how complex your return is, how quickly all of your tax information is supplied and how busy it is during that time of year.

I filed my return with you last year. Do I need to bring in my past year returns?

No, if you filed with us last year we will have a copy of your previous years' information.

What if I did not prepare returns for previous years?

We’re happy to help with returns for previous years.  Just review our What to Bring page and gather all relevant documents. Coming in earlier in the tax season gives us plenty of time to talk things through and prepare everything properly.
If you owe taxes, there may be a penalty for filing after the deadline; if you don’t owe taxes, there’s no penalty.

I paid out of pocket for several prescriptions—what’s the best way to provide that information to you?

Most pharmacies can print a free summary of all prescription medications you paid for through the year. Please submit this summary to us along with your other information.  With the summary (or summaries) there is no need to submit original receipts to us, but please retain them for your records.

Are my medical expenses eligible?
Please see the CRA 2025 guidelines for medical expenses  If you still have questions just ask us when you drop off your information.

I have a small business/rental property.  What expense receipts do I need to bring in?

Please see our Forms for Download page.  There you will find our forms to help you complete the necessary income and expense information.  You can also pick up a copy from our office. By carefully completing the yearly totals in these forms and including  them in the tax information  you drop off to us, they may help to reduce  additional costs on your tax preparation fee.  There is no need to submit original receipts to us, but please retain them for your records.

How do I notify CRA of a change in my address or marital status?

If you’re registered for the CRA’s online services, you can change your personal details such as an address change or change in marital status by going to your CRA My Account or by calling the CRA at 1-800-959-8281. You can also fill out the appropriate form(s) and and send them to your tax centre.

How can I get a copy of my notice of assessment or reassessment?

You can get a copy in your CRA My Account. You will be able to view and print detailed information of an assessment or reassessment of your income tax and benefit return for the current year and the 10 previous years.  If you have not set up your CRA My Account, you will receive a copy of your notice in the mail.

Should my spouse be a beneficiary or a successor on my TFSA account?

A spouse named successor holder takes over the TFSA, which continues tax-free and doesn’t use their contribution room. A beneficiary receives the TFSA tax-free, but the account closes and post-death growth is taxable. For spouses, successor holder is usually better.

Special Situations

Are there age requirements for filing individual benefits and credits?

You can file for Ontario-related benefits at age 18 and the federal GST benefit at age 19.

What is a Form T1135?

It is a mandatory form for taxpayers who owned specified foreign property with a total cost of more than $100,000 CAD.

What can I do in My Account?

My Account is an online portal where you can find most of your tax information and access many of your tax slips. You can also use My Account to: change your personal information, such as your address, phone number, and marital status register for direct deposit make a payment track the status of your return apply for child benefits receive mail and email notifications view uncashed cheques use the Express NOA service and so much more!

I'm from out of town -- can you still prepare my taxes for me?

Yes! We have clients from across Canada.  Please come in to discuss your situations with our team.

I received a call from someone claiming to work for the Canada Revenue Agency. What should I do?

Never provide any any personal information over the phone. Ask for their contact information to call them back.  You can then call us to talk about next steps.  You can also go to the scams&frauds page on the CRA website for more information.

I received an email claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency. What should I do?

Be careful with emails from unknown senders. Don’t click links or open attachments unless you trust the source. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) will never ask for personal information by email— they only email to tell you to log in to your CRA account to read a new message. The CRA website scams&frauds has helpful information on this topic.  Give us a call if you are unsure what to do next.

I received a notice of reassessment or other letter from the CRA that says I owe more money. What should I do?

Please give us a call so we can ensure that the information is correct.  Addressing this immediately can help avoid any additional interest charges or fines.
